RESEARCH IN PLASMA PROTEINS AT STATENS SERUM INSTITUT
Statens Serum Institut has a long tradition for research in plasma proteins and plasma-based pharmaceuticals. The Institute has according to this knowledge developed, produced, and secured delivery of a number of plasma-based pharmaceuticals for the Danish population until 2005. Among these were clotting factor products for haemophiliacs and immunoglobulin (IVIG), among other things used for restoring the immune system.
The Research within the plasma area concerns all aspects of plasma proteins: structure, function, biosynthesis and therapeutic use. The focus is mainly on detecting and describing the connection between causes of life threatening diseases and plasma proteins, and on developing new plasma based pharmaceuticals with potential therapeutic use for treatment of these diseases. As part of the research new protein chemical and immuno chemical methods and analyses are developed. Clinical testing of new plasma products are performed.
Current projects: Mannan-binding lectin (MBL) for prevention and treatment of infections Gc globulin for prevention and treatment of organ failure Angiogenesis inhibitors for treatment of cancer
