THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE AND CONSUMPTION
|
With the exception of a few countries such as Denmark, antibiotic resistance is increasing worldwide . This has resulted in a correspondingly increased focus on issues that promote this development. The antibiotic consumption has proved to be the most important single cause for the increasing bacterial resistance. The consumption of antibiotics can be influenced by guidelines, lectures, medicine grants, and policies. Therefore it is important to understand the relationship of these factors. This requires uniform methods of reporting on antibiotic resistance, on-going registration of the prevalence of clinically important resistant bacteria, and a detailed registration of antibiotic consumption. On a daily basis the clinical microbiological departments perform antibiotic susceptibility testing on bacteria and the Danish Medicines Agency collects data on antibiotic consumption in general practice and in hospitals. Statens Serum Institut is committed to improve the tools for validating such data.
