- Epidemiology Research

Through many years, the institute has been involved in research activities in Greenland, and what started as individual projects has now found an organizational structure within the Department of Epidemiology Research. The section for research in Greenland performs population-based studies on e.g. infectious diseases, cancer, and allergy in close collaboration with the local authorities.

Background

The earliest studies were carried out in 1980-81 on the epidemiology of Epstein-Barr virus and nasopharyngeal cancer, a cancer that is rare in most places of the world, but seen at relatively high rates in Greenland. These studies were in the 1980’ies followed by studies on hepatitis, HIV-infection and sexual transmitted diseases.

In the 1990’ies a section for research in Greenland was formed, expanding the activities. A position as senior researcher within infectious disease epidemiology in Greenland was established at the Department by the Greenlandic Health Authorities and the Danish Ministry of Research. A number of population-based studies, primarily longitudinal and cross sectional field studies, but also register based, have since then been carried out mainly within the fields infectious diseases, cancer, and allergy.
