-Epidemiology Research

The epidemiology of infectious diseases is a central area of research and involves both descriptive surveys, methodologic work on issues of transmission, and research into acute and chronic effects of infection.

Infectious agents of particular interest are viral infections during childhood, Epstein-Barr virus and other herpes virus, RSV, hepatitis virus, human papillomaviruses and retroviruses (HIV-1, HIV-2, HTLV-1).
Furthermore, major ongoing studies focus on issues related to the spread of foodborne diseases, diarrhoeal diseases, and upper and lower respiratory infections.
